Homecoming Week

So growing up homecoming was never a big deal at my high school. At least I do not remember it being a big deal...BUT in Texas is is more than a big deal it is a HUGE deal.

So the festivities went as follows Monday was Celebrity day. A few students dressed up and 4 teachers dressed. I was one of those teachers. I borrowed my youngest son's Renaissance costume and I became William Shakespeare. The photo is below.

Tuesday was career day and because we had big wigs coming in the building I dressed like a very good teacher; heels and all. Guess what my students dressed as? Basketball players and rappers. I did have a few that dressed as doctors and CEOs.

Wednesday was crazy; it was retro/tacky day. You got to pick which one to be. I went way retro and wore a poodle skirt with a sweater set and white keds. I was retro. Most of our kids came in tacky clothes and I do mean T-A-C-K-Y. The principal had to give them a very stern warning about there behavior and clothing. They got it under control and had a great day the rest of the day.

Thursday was pink-out for breast cancer. I have a pink shirt that has a pair of cowboy boots and hat that says "Give Cancer The Boot". I wore that. I also have one with pink boxing gloves that say hope and love with the pink ribbon with the phrase "fight like a girl". I decided not to wear that one.

Friday was spirit day so I wore my traditional blue dress with the highlander blue-black and white plaid.

Overall it was a good week and we get to extend it to Monday because we can sport our Ranger gear with jeans. Go Rangers!!

Isn't homecoming all about a big football game and (usually) a formal dance?
We had homecoming at Tamarac. Back then, we always played Averill Park for that game. And, it was the weekend that they always did the huge indoor carnival. Mom used to take us every year.

They do have a pep rally, two to be exact because they were inside during the day.

Then the football game; I did not go this year. I finally got better did not want to get sick again.

They had planned a dance but not enough tickets were sold so it had to cancel it.

I do not remember a carnival at all and I remember dances for everything so I guess I do not remember just one for homecoming.

We sure did not wear huge and I do mean huge mums in school.

Ah, I'd forgotten about those Homecoming days. I remember we had Nerd Day, 50's Day... They probably have 80's Day now. But everyday was 80's Day then. Sigh.

Oh Bone how could you forget homecoming. You live in a state where football is KING. Where/are mums a big thing?

They are so not a big deal up north.

I was shocked and awed when I saw one for the first time.

Well, when I was in school, back in the 1900's, if you had a date for Homecoming you bought her a corsage. Not sure if they still do that though.

Oh no they wear mum's that are as big as they are. They usually have a strap to help hold them up. One of the girls had a mum that had lights on it. CRAZY!
